Unfamiliar Pain Disorder

Status like somatization disorder, dyspareunia, mood disorders or conversion disorder can eliminate pain disorder as a diagnosis. However, there are authors who propose that the diagnosis for unfamiliar pain should be adjustment disorder because it does not pathologize individuals with this medical status.

Pain may start and stop frequently, it can be consistent, or it may occur only under some specific conditions. It may be intense, developing all of a sudden and lasting for a short period of time. Or pain may be chronic, with ongoing sensations that last or return repeatedly over several months or years.
